I realize I use alot of diffrent terms when it comes to talkin about Hispanics/Latinos and I am sure that many of u wonder... Why cant they pick a name and just call themselves that! I wish it was that easy myself, but the truth is each term has a diffrent meaning for a reason. So this might explain to you why some prefer the name chicano over mexican or even at times get offended. For the hispanic people that read this you might be shocked as to why u call urself a term cuz even we dnt know the definitions and misplace these words. The way I see it is like this if your going to give yourself any name or title you should know its definition. You wudnt call yourself a girl if u were a guy and vice versu so dont be suprised when you relize you beenusing the wrong term all along!! Hispanic-This means a person who speaks spanish comes from a latin backround, from any country in the world. This is usually the best term to use for people born in the Us who have parents from Mexico. Especialy those that are proud to be American Citizens. Latino/a-This means from any latin backround, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Salvadorian, Dominican, Mexican Guatemanlen( all latin coutries and thers lots more!) They dont nesasarly have to speak spanish but this term best suits people who are mixed with more than just Mexican but also are Puerto Rican or Salvidorian mix, of corse there are terms being born to identify those clases cuse they are geting larger in number, like Salvimex- half salvadorian half mexican. Latin also is for the person who is very proud of where they come from and lean towards those customs more than the americans, difrent from hispanics who are more into American culture. Chicano/a-This is a person whos half white, and half mexican. One parent was full white the other was full mexican. Mexican American-Mexican American means born in USa but full blooded mexican no mix. Spanish-Its a language, please remember this! Other than that this is also wat you call a person from Spain. There culture is difrent from the mexican and the Mexican is difrent from the Cuban, Salvadorian Dominican, all. All Dominican Salvadorian Mexican PuertoRican, Colombian,guatamalen Hondurian are people from that particular country. Born citizens or those that carry that blood you would be surprised no matter that they speak the same language and have alot of the same cultural backround theyre very diffrent and barely get along with eacother, time is changing this but there is alot of discriination towards one another. Take it from someone who is Half Mexican and Half Salvadoirn. I always was treated difrent for being the other half. Its sad but a reality. this is why some prefer certain terms. American- Born in the United states of america!
